![]() Papua New Guinea EDUCATION Minister Jimmy Uguro has condemned the attack on a teacher by students in Port Moresby, calling it “immoral” and showing a lack of respect and discipline among teachers and students. “Teachers and students should learn to respect each other at all times to avoid such incidents, inside or outside the school premises,” Uguro said. “There must be discipline in schools, and it should start from the teachers.” The three-minute video of the incident outside the Ted Diro Primary School in Hohola, which had gone viral on social media since last Thursday, showed students surrounding the teacher outside the school. A student is seen throwing punches at the teacher’s head, before the teacher ran onto the road. Other students chased him. ![]() PAPUA New Guinea Defence Force Commander Major-General Mark Goina says his administration is looking to reintroduce the school military cadet programme. Goina said the programme existed in pre-Independence times (1960s and early 1970s) in schools when PNG was still under Australian rule and now the Marape Government was keen on reintroducing the programme. Goina said this during the 50th anniversary commemoration of the Caribou Crash of 1972 at De la Salle Secondary School in Bomana last Monday. “This event is very significant in the school’s history and also for both PNG and Australia,” he said. He said both countries still stood together to demonstrate the importance of the anniversary. MORE than 60 participants attended a week-long information sharing training to improve their teaching in mathematics and science for secondary schools in Papua New Guinea .
According to Japan International Corporation Agency Papua New Guinea (Jica) chief representative Masato Koinuma, many students face issues in understanding these subjects and the training was designed to train teachers to improve teaching the two subjects – math and science. PNG Education Minister Jimmy Uguro has warned against bribery and nepotism in education system and called for all children to be allowed their right to an education by 2027.
Uguro, who is also the member for Usino-Bundi, said this during his welcome ceremony by the Education Department in Port Moresby on Wednesday. “Teachers, inspectors and everyone in authority should not take bribes or have favourites in any schools in the system but allow students to be educated freely,” he said. ![]() A VIDEO currently circulating of students from Ted Diro Primary School in Port Moresby allegedly assaulting a teacher must be investigated, says the Teachers Service Commission. Commission chairman Samson Wangihomie said students, who claimed that the teacher had earlier hit one of them, should not take such retaliatory action. “Whether the students are, or the teacher is, at fault, students should always report the matter to the head teacher who will decide on disciplinary action to take,” he said. Madang Teachers College board chairman Joe Agavi said setting standards for students started with teachers and colleges played a role in what kind of graduates they produced. He said at MTC the focus was on improving facilities and amenities to balance out curriculum work and extra-curricular activities. Hela education adviser Ronny Angu said this exams would be for mathematics, English and information and communication technology (ICT) for primary schools including exams for subject areas and specialist teachers. Sixty-eight Papua New Guinea students have left the country yesterday on an Air Niugini charter to continue their studies in China.
The travel was made possible through a joint support from the Chinese and PNG governments. Chinese Ambassador Zeng Fanhua was at Jacksons International Airport to see the students off. Zeng said the Chinese state councillor and foreign minister Wang Yi reached consensus on a number of important issues with Prime Minister James Marape and then Foreign Affairs Minister Soroi Eoe during his visit to PNG in June. ENGA Governor Sir Peter Ipatas says his government will be looking into re-developing existing schools to house students displaced by General Election 2022-related violence.
“It is the responsibility of the provincial government and that is a big burden,” he said. “Some of them have been destroyed completely so we might not rebuild them. The plan is now to improve existing schools’ infrastructure so they can take in the children that are misplaced. “That will be the short-term strategy and then we can look at more solutions in the future with our priority to be to take care of those out of school and home first.” |
