Grade 9 Selections
The Grade 9 Selection List is produced by the Provinces through the Provincial Examination Supervisors (PES). Below are tips on how the Grade 8 Examinations are conducted and Grade 9 Selections are done.
Grade 8 Examination
The Grade 8 Examinations are produced by the Department of Education through the Measurement Services Division (MSD). The marking and recording of the Grade 8 Examinations scripts and marks are done in the provinces. The PES uses a program called LEPARD to process Grade 8 Examination Results.
Grade 9 Selections
The Grade 9 Selections are done through the LEPARD program in the Provinces. The LEPARD Program has the list of High Schools and Secondary Schools for that province. When a student meets the minimum required mark, his or her name is listed under a High or Secondary School.
The Cutoffs of Grade 9 Selections are shown below.
Grade 8 Cut-off marks guide provinces to do grade 9 selections which is determined by the number of spaces available in respective secondary and high schools in respective provinces. Provinces decide their cut-off marks, as it is the responsibility of the province.
The National cut-off mark is 80 points but some provinces set their own cut-off marks depending on the provincial average cut off marks and grad 9 space available in respective secondary and high schools per province.
The National Benchmark level or Cut Off Mark of 80 points is the benchmark set for students’ achievement and progress towards meeting the standards. The National benchmark sets a very high performance standards or achievement level.
However, the National average cut off marks for almost all provinces in the past five years has been around 60 points which is well below the benchmark of 80 points. That indicates most students have been enrolled into grade 9 with cut off marks of 60 or even less.

Where to See the Grade 9 Selection List
Grade 9 selection lists are available in the provincial Education Offices. The Grade 9 Selection lists are not published online.
Most times, PES sends the selection lists to the primary schools. The Headteachers declare the selected students during the primary school grade 8 graduations.

- Grade 8 students must consult the provincial Education office or the PES in the province.
- Also check with the primary school where you last attended or did your grade 8 examinations.
Most times, PES sends the selection lists to the primary schools. The Headteachers declare the selected students during the primary school grade 8 graduations.
