PNG Institutions OverviewPapua New Guinea Education System is categorised into several stages. Children attend state-run elementary and Primary schools for basic education. The Primary Level has two stages and these are Lower Primary from Grade 3 to Grade 6. The Upper Primary is from Grade 7 -8 . After completing the 8th Grade children sit for national exams. Those who perform better in the national exams are then selected for High Schools and Secondary Schools. These children are first selected for Lower Secondary (Grade 9 - 10). Children sit for National Exams again after completing the 10th Grade. Those who better grades are then selected for Upper Secondary (from Grades 11 - 12). Students sit for final exam in the 12th Grade. children who get good grades are then selelcted for university studies. Those who do not get better grade go the teachnical colleges or vocational schools.
In addition to the national government system, there is an iinternational school system that ends at high school. Fees are considerably higher than the government run schools, and the curriculum is based on the British system. There are also privately run preschools and primary schools. The University of Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby offers degrees in law, science, medicine and arts. The University of Technology in Lae offers degrees in technical subjects such as engineering, business, architecture, and forestry. The Pacific Adventist College, a privately run university outside Port Moresby, offers courses in education, business, accounting, secretarial studies, and theology. The University of Goroka offers Education until recently other courses in different fields like, Business Management, Accounting,Computer studies etc are offered.
