PNG Education Minister Jimmy Uguro has warned against bribery and nepotism in education system and called for all children to be allowed their right to an education by 2027. Uguro, who is also the member for Usino-Bundi, said this during his welcome ceremony by the Education Department in Port Moresby on Wednesday. “Teachers, inspectors and everyone in authority should not take bribes or have favourites in any schools in the system but allow students to be educated freely,” he said. He said the ministry’s challenge was to ensure that by 2027 all children of school age would be in school and be able to complete grade 12.
Uguro said this was the main goal for the Government in this term of parliament. He said all aspects of education including infrastructure, administration and teacher training needed to be geared toward this end. Uguro said flexible, open and distance education (Fode) was a key component of the plan. He added that technical secondary schools would attain full secondary schools status. Uguro urged the Teaching Service Commission to ensure its pay structure rewarded committed and effective teachers through the one teacher, one pay policy. He urged all stakeholders to work to achieve the goal to improve education in the country. Secretary Dr Uke Kombra congratulated Uguro and assured him that the department would work to with him achieve the Government’s objectives.
