ENGA Governor Sir Peter Ipatas says his government will be looking into re-developing existing schools to house students displaced by General Election 2022-related violence. “It is the responsibility of the provincial government and that is a big burden,” he said. “Some of them have been destroyed completely so we might not rebuild them. The plan is now to improve existing schools’ infrastructure so they can take in the children that are misplaced. “That will be the short-term strategy and then we can look at more solutions in the future with our priority to be to take care of those out of school and home first.” In May, there were reports of a male dormitory at Porgera Secondary School being burnt followed by similar reports from Highlands Lutheran International School.
It is alleged that opportunists took advantage of the situation and burned six classrooms, an administration building, a double-storey girls’ dormitory as well as the principal’s house. In July, several buildings at Yumbilyam High School in Kompiam-Ambum were torched by supporters over hijacking of ballot boxes. The most recent incident was the removal of building materials from the Tsak Valley Secondary School in Wapenamanda.
