Imbonggu MP Pila Niningi opened a two-story dormitory that will be used by boys attending the Buiebi High School in Imbonggu, Southern Highland, on Friday. It cost nearly K2 million and will accommodate 116 students. Niningi said the boys should bring only their blankets as mattresses and pillows were provided. “We are giving priority to education,” he said. “The provincial government allocated K10 million to education. “I have to support the provincial government by improving school facilities in the district. “My district has no resources. The incident happened yesterday morning three kilometers from the Aiyura National High School in the Obura-Wonenara district of Eastern Highlands where they were going to start classes in Grade 11 and Grade 12. Provincial police commander Michael Welly told The National that the accident happened at around 10am yesterday when the driver lost control of the vehicle. This year, students attending all institutions registered to carry out the student help loan program, are required to pay compulsory fees before applying for loan, a requirement which was not applied in 2020, when the program first rolled out. At UPNG, students will have to pay a compulsory fee of K2,930 if they want to apply for loan. “If students want to apply for Help assistance they have to be students first and register first, and registration is based upon paying your compulsory fees,” the university Vice Chancellor, Frank Griffin said explaining that the program is being administered by the department. “Last year we were advised by the government to leave no one behind and so we went ahead to register students based on what the advice was that came from the government. The Papua New Guinea Education Department had declined to accept new graduates from teachers colleges in the country who did not meet certain criteria. The department said in a statement that new graduates in 2017, 2018 and 2019 who were not endorsed by the department had been declined to be registered as teachers in the country. Mr Gibson had to hold back both his son and daughter from going to Lae Unitech and UPNG medical studies respectively, over the last year as he couldn’t find enough fees to continue supporting them. He has 12 children and has six of them attending schools. The Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) will issue travel tickets for all AES and HECAS awardees for 2021. Tickets will be issued by the Department of Higher Education through Air Niugini or appropriate airline services, the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology has advised. TESAS categories of AES and HECAS include travel arrangements to the institution from the port of travel as supplied by the student during the National Online Application System period.
