She completed Grade 12 at Lae Secondary School last year and was accepted into the University of Natural Resources and Environment (UNRE) in Vudal, East New Britain, to take up a degree in tropical agriculture. However, Ricks’ journey to pursue higher education has hit a snag as she needs financial assistance to achieve her goal. She is the last in a family of five and her parents, Anne and Moses Yapo, are subsistent farmers. She is a village girl with big dreams – bigger than what her family can afford. Ricks completed her elementary to grade six in her home province. In 2014, she moved to Lae to live with her uncle – for a better chance at furthering her education. ![]() COOPERATION between China and Papua New Guinea in areas of education has always been an important part of the overall relations, says Chinese Ambassador Xue Bing. Xue said each year, China provided about 30 government scholarships to PNG students to study in China. “Up to now, over 450 PNG students have been accorded Chinese scholarships,” he said. “Most of them have returned to Papua New Guinea after completing their studies in China and have taken up important jobs in government departments, companies and institutions.” THE PNG Teachers Association (PNGTA) will not be represented on the National Education Board until their in-house issues are sorted out, according to the Teaching Service Commission (TSC).
Chairman Samson Wangihomie said yesterday that the commission acknowledged the elections that were conducted by the industrial registrar and the PNG Electoral Commission. He said the election of Aita Sanangapa as PNGTA president, including administrative staff David Numbaming as general-secretary was before the courts. “However, the issue that TSC, including the National Education Board, has is the infighting between the current PNGTA national management committee and the old national management committee,” he said. “The election of the current national management committee headed by Aita Sanangape is now being questioned and is now being contested in court. ![]() HEALTH workers in PNG should reflect their colours and include God in their career while attending to patients, a church representative says. Church of the Nazarene national board chairman Rev Yambe Sike said this to 29 graduating students of the Kudjip Nazarene College of Nursing in Jiwaka after they received diplomas in nursing on Saturday. Rev Sike said health workers played a vital role in people’s lives by administering healthcare. He said treating and helping patients heal reflected a love for their fellow man and of God. This grant is implemented by the BEST PNG Program Management Unit (PMU) that is supported by Save the Children in PNG (SCPNG) as Grant Agent. ![]() TEACHER appointments in the country are not made by any other office except the provincial education board (PEB), according to the Teaching Service Commission. Commissioner Samson Wangihomie said that officers could submit applications for the PEB to consider. “The authority is the PEBs and not anybody else,” he said. “But there are avenues where teachers can appeal. ![]() CATHOLIC schools in Southern Highlands and Hela will not be able to take in dozens of primary school teachers that graduate each year due to limited spaces, but there is a high demand for teachers in high and secondary schools, Catholic education agency secretary said. Daniel Beli said many primary school teachers would not be able to secure teaching positions at present and have to wait for planning of additional positions after a few months and a review next month. Beli said some graduate teachers were from unrecognised teachers colleges and were not accepted when applied for teaching positions at Government and agency schools. “This is a sad scenario for graduates and sponsors,” he said. “Parents and sponsors have to be cautious when sponsoring students to teachers colleges. |
