![]() THE board of a teachers college has described the higher education secretary’s call for institutions to meet the 10 standards for institutional registration and seven standards for programme accreditation as a way forward for the country’s education system. Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) secretary Fr Jan made the call last week for newly established teachers colleges to meet the requirements to apply for registration as higher education institutions. Fr Jan said if teachers colleges were established by the Education Department then they would be given a year to apply for registration as a higher education institution. THE Flexible open and distance education (Fode) curriculum writers in Port Moresby had a three-day workshop last week on online content development training.
National Fode principal Anthony Rayappan told The National that Fode was now embarking on rolling out online courses this year. “We are training our curriculum writers (teachers) to develop and design content for online courses,” Rayappan said. “This will be facilitated by the commonwealth of learning experts from other countries. “We have development partners in New Zealand, South Africa and Canada. ![]() THE Japanese government has funded school buildings and equipment to improve elementary and primary schools in three provinces through its Grassroots projects scheme. Japanese Ambassador Kuniyuki Nakahara said school buildings and equipment valuing more than K830,000 would be distributed to Koki Elementary School in the National Capital District, Dagona Primary School in Central, and Napapar Primary School in East New Britain. Nakahara said the three schools were recipients of the Japanese government scheme called grant assistance for grassroots human security projects. “Through our financial support, these three schools are provided with school buildings and necessary equipment with the total amount of about JP¥25 million (K831,000),” Nakahara said. ![]() A PARTNERSHIP will be formalised between two private institutions in East New Britain between the Destiny schools and Bismarck Teachers College. This was announced by Bismarck Teachers College director Linus Vairop. Vairop said the partnership between the institutions would pave way for teacher training for early childhood educators. He said there was a need for early childhood learning in the new covenant ministry international (NCMI) Destiny schools which was established in 2006. MOROBE deputy administrator (social services) Robin Bazzinuc has appealed to all teachers to refrain from skipping classes during school hours.
“This appeal is to both early childhood, secondary and technical vocational education training school teachers – you are paid, so do not neglect your duties,” he added. “If any teacher (s) is not in the classroom during school hours, they have to be reported to the authorities.” Bazzinuc said this in his address at Bugandi Secondary school recently after some teachers had skipped classes. ![]() The teaching Staff and over 800 Students of Lake Kutubu Secondary School in the Southern Highlands have joined the nation in mourning the death of Father of the Nation and Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare. According to teacher Mr. Sam Waka, Kutubu Secondary School is also mourning the loss of late Sir Michael Thomas Somare. Teachers, Students and the local community paid their respect by laying wreaths at the school ground. The man, who is also a relative of the girl, had been friends with her for quite some time. Madang commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang said villagers worked with the police which led to the arrest yesterday afternoon.
