![]() This Divine Word University DWU alumnus and public servant, Mr Michael Ariando was born on 2 December 1973, the day then Mr Michael Thomas Somare and his team gained self-government and he (Somare) became Chief Minister. Michael Ariando’s parents James and Jenny (both now deceased) from Upper Mendi, were public servants working in Ialibu station when Michael was born at the Ialibu district health centre on the very day Michael T Somare and his colleagues were gaining self-government in Port Moresby. The parents, inspired by the momentous national occasion that Michael Somare was leading in Port Moresby named their newborn son Michael. Fast-forward to this morning where Michael Ariando is now the Deputy CEO at the Ialibu-Pangia District based in Ialibu said: “Those of us named after Sir Michael will not easily forget him”.
“That time (late 60s and through the 70s) he was a young man, brilliant and fought for us without bloodshed. “Everything worked easily for him; God was on his side." “We can see that from the fact that self-government was given with ease and only two years after, independence came.” “It was Sir Michael’s leadership and ability to inspire his peers and everyone to make sure we got independence with ease only two years later.” Mr Ariando said in Ialibu-Pangia public servants and ordinary people are in mourning and talking about Sir Michael all day every day since his passing. “This morning students in the primary schools in Ialibu town are preparing for a hauskrai (mourning) ceremony.” “Personally, I am saddened by the loss of our great leader; I am reminded of him daily as my namesake and what he stood for and fought as a public servant and politician all his life”. “Given that Papua New Guineans here in Ialibu and everywhere are in mourning and talking about Sir Michael Somare shows the impact he had on their lives. “People are talking about his life and what he stood for and did. “We are hoping that this will inspire all of us to change our attitudes and actions and do things better and something good for our country will come out from the Sir Michael’s death,” said Mr Michael Ariando. Mr Michael Ariando (pictured) is receiving his Bachelor of Public Administration degree paper from the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Associate Professor Sister Miriam Dlugosz SSpS, PhD during the graduation ceremony in March last year. Mr Ariando also has a Diploma in Public Administration from the PNG Institute of Public Administration (the site where Michael Somare and his peers met each evening and talked about self-determination and formed the famous 'Bully Beef Club').
