![]() WESTERN Highlands’ Nanga Emmanuel Primary School girls can now concentrate on their lessons in class without worrying about their menstrual hygiene, water and sanitation facilities. “The basic amenities and facilities have been installed for students’ use, especially those with disabilities,” water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash) programme manager Patrick Goimba said. Goimba said the facilities would have a positive impact on the productivity, health and well-being of students, especially the girls who would be able to attend school without having to stay home when they were unwell. “Many girls (miss) school because of deficient menstrual hygiene materials, lack of water and sanitation facilities and fear of menstrual accidents,” he said.
“It is now the duty of the school, especially the appointed hygiene committee, to make sure the facilities are looked after well and damages be reported to the school board of management for immediate replacement.” More than 600 students and 19 teachers gathered on Friday to thank Care International, the Mt Hagen city authority and others at the commissioning of water and sanitation facilities, shower rooms for girls and an incinerator. Goimba said the project was supported by the European Union and the United Nations International Children’s Fund.
