Don Bosco Technological Institute (DBTI) recently hosted its second stakeholders meeting in Port Moresby, focusing on its potential transition to university status. The event, held from July 11-13, brought together participants from the education, government, and industrial sectors, as well as members of the clergy, Salesians, DBTI alumni, and staff. The meeting featured a keynote address by former University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kenneth Sumbuk. In his speech, Prof. Sumbuk acknowledged DBTI’s progress toward meeting university requirements but emphasized the need for the institution to uphold quality standards amid the educational challenges facing the country. “DBTI has already ticked many of the requirements for being a university, but it needs to assure and maintain quality standards as it responds to the educational crisis that threatens the country,” he said. He praised DBTI for addressing the educational needs of Papua New Guinea. The theme of the discussions, “Dreaming Together for DBTI to be a University,” centered on the institute's future as an advanced higher educational institution. The dialogues also included representation from Catholic educational institutions.
Bishop Peter Baquero of Kerema, who oversees education within the Catholic Church, highlighted the unique role of Don Bosco’s educational mission in Papua New Guinea. He noted that the institute was invited by Catholic bishops rather than government or business entities, emphasizing the focus on educating and evangelizing PNG youth through Don Bosco’s technical education model. Bishop Baquero urged DBTI to remain true to the Salesian charism and preventive education system, which emphasizes care for the less privileged. He encouraged the institution to discern its future direction not merely in response to educational needs but as a response to a higher calling. Also read Comments are closed.
