Masidah Tonaim, a budding academic and tutor at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), is on a mission to cultivate future professionals and leaders with a deeper understanding of economic development. This year, she was awarded a prestigious scholarship to pursue a Master of International and Development Economics at the Australian National University (ANU) Crawford School of Public Policy. Describing her experience at ANU as both "scary yet exciting," Masidah has had to navigate and adapt to different learning styles compared to her time at UPNG. Despite the initial challenges, she found solace in the supportive environment. "As a very reserved person, it was difficult coming out of my shell to engage with other students and interact with colleagues. However, it was also very comforting to find that a lot of the students and staff are very welcoming and always happy to assist," she shared. Masidah's journey is not just about personal growth but also about giving back to her community. Upon completing her studies, she will return to UPNG in 2025 to assume a lecturing position within the economics department. Her goal is to inspire and mentor the next generation of economists and policymakers in Papua New Guinea. The ANU-UPNG partnership has been instrumental in fostering academic excellence and international collaboration. Through this partnership, 10 UPNG Master of Economics and Public Policy graduates have received scholarships to further their studies at ANU, exemplifying a commitment to educational development and capacity building. Masidah Tonaim's story is a testament to the power of education and the impact of international scholarships. Her dedication to her field and her determination to improve economic understanding in her home country highlight the transformative potential of academic opportunities.
