Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra has urged provincial education advisers (PEAs) to concentrate on delivering a high-quality 13 years of universal education for students in their regions. This directive was given during the senior education officers conference in Vanimo last week. Dr. Kombra emphasized that the nation's greatest asset is its people, rather than its natural resources or geographical positioning. “Research shows that investing K98 in a child can generate a K512 return through sustainable improvements in various aspects of life, including better health, reduced teen pregnancies, and lower crime rates,” Kombra explained. At the conference, Kombra challenged the PEAs and their teams to focus on these issues and develop strategies to overcome them, ensuring that no child is excluded from receiving a quality education. The Education Secretary outlined key goals for the next five years, stressing the importance of ensuring that every nine-year-old can read with understanding to address learning deficits. He identified five priority areas for focus:
Equipping children with the readiness to learn Ensuring teachers are prepared to teach effectively Creating school environments that support both teachers and students Developing adaptable and relevant educational pathways Updating the management practices within the education sector Kombra noted that Papua New Guinea has the necessary global and local expertise to make these improvements. He called for increased investment in proven, cost-effective educational interventions and emphasized the need to prioritize foundational education. Also read Comments are closed.
