Students at Wosera Secondary School (WSS) in East Sepik have recently gained access to a new computer laboratory and Wi-Fi network, thanks to funding from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the Food Agriculture Organisation under the European Union-Support to Rural Entrepreneurship, Investment and Trade in PNG (EU-Streit PNG) programme. Deputy principal Sebastian Janami praised the support, calling it a much-needed boost for the rural institution. “The school, which has been operational for several years, currently serves around 240 students and employs 18 teachers,” Janami said. He highlighted that the addition of grades seven and eleven last year, along with the upcoming introduction of grades eight and twelve, has presented significant challenges. Prior to the installation of the new facilities, the school relied solely on photocopiers for printing educational materials, as it lacked access to textbooks and other resources. “With the new Wi-Fi network, we are now encouraging both students and teachers to use it for academic purposes,” Janami added.
The introduction of the computer laboratory and Wi-Fi is seen as a major advancement for the school. Janami noted that the absence of a library and computer resources had previously limited the ability to assign research homework. “The new resources will allow us to better support our students’ research needs and improve educational outcomes,” he stated. The computer laboratory, which was installed a week ago, is also expected to benefit local farmers by providing access to e-commerce and e-marketing opportunities. WSS head boy Hillary Makain expressed his appreciation for the new facilities. “The Wi-Fi has greatly improved my ability to conduct research without incurring additional costs, and it has enhanced my research skills,” Makain said.
