THE Assembly of God (AOG) Church will be establishing a new Teachers College in Mul LLG of the Mul-Baiyer Lumusa Electorate of Western Highlands Province, under the guidance of Jubilee University administration. The ground breaking ceremony for the new AOG Kiminga Teachers College was held yesterday in Pin council ward at the proposed site. Members of Kiminga AOG church had reason to celebrate because through their prayers to God, people in authority finally arrived to give assurance for the establishment of the college in their humble village. The event was well organized, colourful and on a fine weather. ![]() GORDON International School students and staff were privileged to participate at the 11th National Parliament official opening last month. Principal Jennie Kaupa told The National that it was their first experience to be part of an important programme for the government. “This is the first time for our children to sing the national anthem especially at the Parliament house opening,” she said. Kaupa said teachers had brought students for excursion to Parliament in the past but this was the first time for them to participate in special event. ![]() Schools around Morobe's ten Districts that divert the Morobe Provincial Government infrastructural grants that were issued to schools during the former Governor Ginson Saonu, will be held accountable. This warning was issued by Morobe's Deputy Provincial Administrator for Social Services Robin Bazzinuc. Mr Bazzinuc confirms that a total of K12 million was issued last year to 29 secondary and high schools, 9 TVET centres, 2 FODE schools and 3 private and permitted school around Morobe. ![]() Papua New Guinea EDUCATION Minister Jimmy Uguro has condemned the attack on a teacher by students in Port Moresby, calling it “immoral” and showing a lack of respect and discipline among teachers and students. “Teachers and students should learn to respect each other at all times to avoid such incidents, inside or outside the school premises,” Uguro said. “There must be discipline in schools, and it should start from the teachers.” The three-minute video of the incident outside the Ted Diro Primary School in Hohola, which had gone viral on social media since last Thursday, showed students surrounding the teacher outside the school. A student is seen throwing punches at the teacher’s head, before the teacher ran onto the road. Other students chased him. ![]() PAPUA New Guinea Defence Force Commander Major-General Mark Goina says his administration is looking to reintroduce the school military cadet programme. Goina said the programme existed in pre-Independence times (1960s and early 1970s) in schools when PNG was still under Australian rule and now the Marape Government was keen on reintroducing the programme. Goina said this during the 50th anniversary commemoration of the Caribou Crash of 1972 at De la Salle Secondary School in Bomana last Monday. “This event is very significant in the school’s history and also for both PNG and Australia,” he said. He said both countries still stood together to demonstrate the importance of the anniversary. MORE than 60 participants attended a week-long information sharing training to improve their teaching in mathematics and science for secondary schools in Papua New Guinea .
According to Japan International Corporation Agency Papua New Guinea (Jica) chief representative Masato Koinuma, many students face issues in understanding these subjects and the training was designed to train teachers to improve teaching the two subjects – math and science. PNG Education Minister Jimmy Uguro has warned against bribery and nepotism in education system and called for all children to be allowed their right to an education by 2027.
Uguro, who is also the member for Usino-Bundi, said this during his welcome ceremony by the Education Department in Port Moresby on Wednesday. “Teachers, inspectors and everyone in authority should not take bribes or have favourites in any schools in the system but allow students to be educated freely,” he said. ![]() A VIDEO currently circulating of students from Ted Diro Primary School in Port Moresby allegedly assaulting a teacher must be investigated, says the Teachers Service Commission. Commission chairman Samson Wangihomie said students, who claimed that the teacher had earlier hit one of them, should not take such retaliatory action. “Whether the students are, or the teacher is, at fault, students should always report the matter to the head teacher who will decide on disciplinary action to take,” he said. THE drop in education standards across Papua New Guinea falls back on discipline enforced at teachers colleges, an official says.
Madang Teachers College board chairman Joe Agavi said setting standards for students started with teachers and colleges played a role in what kind of graduates they produced. He said at MTC the focus was on improving facilities and amenities to balance out curriculum work and extra-curricular activities. Minister for Education, Jimmy Uguro, was given a warm welcome by the Secretary of Education, Dr Uke Kombra and members of the Education Department nationwide after being reappointed into the Education Ministry by Prime Minister, James Marape.
Kombra on behalf of the Ministry of Education welcomed the return of the Education Minister, at the Stanley Hotel in Port Moresby yesterday and congratulated him for his successful appointment by the Prime Minister for another 5 years. Secretary Kombra mentioned the competency of the Minister as something clearly demonstrated extremely well for him to be appointed the same role in which he has confidently portrayed in his leadership. |
