The Teaching Service Commission’s (TSC) commissioner policy chairman, Samson Wangihomie, made the remarks during the 58th graduation ceremony of Balob Teachers College in Lae, Morobe, on Saturday. Wangihomie emphasised on the college’s motto “Balob to serve,” which stated that the institution’s graduates must be committed and must work hard to serve their vocation. “Some choose a teaching career for the sake of working and earning an income, but some choose the profession as a noble vocation so they can be committed in their teaching,” he said. “Dress up decently and professionally because you will be a role model to your students. ![]() FOUR French scientists from Paris and Noumea are in Papua New Guinea (PNG) to engage with local scientists and university students and academics in developing initiatives for long-term collaboration and analysis of human activities within the region. Their visit culminated from a visit to PNG by French President Emmanuel Macron in July where a joint declaration was signed with the Government. The declaration agreed for both countries to work hand-in-hand and formulate a country package on nature, forest and climate. A media statement about the visit said the scientists included Laurent Durieux and Marc Despinoy from the French research institute for sustainable development’s Geospatial4PICTS programme based in New Caledonia and Insight Solutions Geospatiales director Jean Massenet and project manager Pearl Winchester. ![]() TOTALENERGIES PNG Ltd (TEP PNG) has signed an understanding with the University of Technology (Unitech) to offer scholarships to third-year students beginning in the New Year. The Papua LNG project operator scholarship programme would initially target the electrical, mechanical or civil engineering, applied physics, communication for development, geographical information sciences or a bachelor of science in agriculture disciplines. TotalEnergies BSE director Marie-Alix Dognin said the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing recently sealed a partnership where they would support scholarships at Unitech. “We are used to working with institutions in Port Moresby which is easy to run in terms of logistics and links and this is the first time to have a close partnership with an institution in Lae,” Dognin said. ![]() Papua New Guinea EDUCATION Minister Jimmy Uguro has issued a warning to those misusing the department’s payroll system which is affecting the salaries of teachers. “Every public servant is paid to do their job. “I am challenging our public servants in our education payroll system not to make (illegal) arrangements. “If you are caught, you will be axed. “Do the right thing for our teachers and we will grow our nation together,” he said. Uguro said this in Parliament this week in response to questions raised by Western Governor Taboi Yoto regarding the non-payment of entitlements for teachers. ![]() Education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty in PNG and TISA is committed to supporting organisations that provide education programs and initiatives for underprivileged children. One such is the Life PNG Care Inc, a community-based organisation that provides education programs for disadvantaged children in Port Moresby and Lae. In a small presentation early this week, TISA donated K30,000 to support Life PNG Care’s education programs for disadvantaged children. ![]() PNG TREASURER Ian Ling-Stuckey announced K854.9 million for tuition fee subsidy, K52 million for higher education loan (Help) and K83 million to assist tertiary institutions. These come under the K4 billion allocated for Education in the National Budget that was tabled on Tuesday. Ling-Stuckey said that the Government aimed to increase the quality of skilled manpower graduating from higher education institutions with necessary skills and knowledge that employers require. “This can be obtained through improved infrastructure facilities, building the absorptive capacity of Tvet institutions, teachers and nursing colleges to address the bottleneck in the education system and the high drop-out rate.” ![]() GRADES 10 and 12 results will be announced on Dec 8, Education Minister Jimmy Uguro says. He told Port Moresby National School of Excellence’s (Pomnaths) 28th graduation in National Capital District on Friday: “Results will be published online, so you can know where your children and school’s positions are. “The Education Department is also working on how to award the best-performing student, teacher and school in the country.” Measurement services unit first assistant secretary Arulappan Packiam said they were still in the process of doing quality checks and entering data, ensuring correct marks were given to students accordingly. ![]() WESTERN Highlands Governor Wai Rapa said education is one of his government’s key priority areas and he will continue to support the education sector in the province. Rapa said this during the Mt Hagen Park Secondary School’s graduation held in Hagen on Friday. “My government will continue to support the education sector by taking some of the burdens off the parents and would work closely with schools,” he said. “We will also build two new technical vocational education training (Tvet) schools to cater for the increasing number of Grade 12s that passed out every year.” |
