Papua New Guinea EDUCATION Minister Jimmy Uguro has issued a warning to those misusing the department’s payroll system which is affecting the salaries of teachers. “Every public servant is paid to do their job. “I am challenging our public servants in our education payroll system not to make (illegal) arrangements. “If you are caught, you will be axed. “Do the right thing for our teachers and we will grow our nation together,” he said. Uguro said this in Parliament this week in response to questions raised by Western Governor Taboi Yoto regarding the non-payment of entitlements for teachers. “There is a syndicate in the Education Department in the payroll section where they ask the teachers for a commission fee to get their entitlements,” Yoto said.
“I want to ask the minister to do an investigation into the payroll section for the teachers so that these issues can be sorted out and the teachers can get their proper entitlements.” In response, Uguro said that he was not aware of any syndicate operating in the department but would investigate the matter. “I have instructed the Teaching Service Commission to investigate and terminate those involved in the salaries section,” he said. He also urged teachers to be mindful of their money. “I am aware that many teachers have loans to pay when they get their own pay and some financial institutions deduct their pay. “The teachers must be responsible for their pay and how they look after their family and welfare,” he said.
