![]() PNG TREASURER Ian Ling-Stuckey announced K854.9 million for tuition fee subsidy, K52 million for higher education loan (Help) and K83 million to assist tertiary institutions. These come under the K4 billion allocated for Education in the National Budget that was tabled on Tuesday. Ling-Stuckey said that the Government aimed to increase the quality of skilled manpower graduating from higher education institutions with necessary skills and knowledge that employers require. “This can be obtained through improved infrastructure facilities, building the absorptive capacity of Tvet institutions, teachers and nursing colleges to address the bottleneck in the education system and the high drop-out rate.” “Universities, colleges and research institutions have all received significant operational budgets to ensure delivery of high quality teaching and research with more emphasis placed on the Flexible Open and Distance Education programme (Fode) to increase opportunities for youths to further their education,” he said.
Ling-Stuckey also announced a K42 million allocation from the sector’s K4 billion for the Measurement Services and Curriculum Development programmes. Education’s allocation is an increase of more than K400 million compared with the 2023 budget and accounts for 14.9 per cent of the overall budget. Meanwhile, the teachers’ salary grants and leave fares previously classified under province are now captured directly under Education.
