A total of 30, 000 students from 188 secondary and the 6 national high schools will sit the Grade 12 National Exams, 73, 000 students from 350 high & secondary schools will sit the Grade 10 National Exams and 130, 000 students from 3, 400 primary schools will sit the Grade 8 National Exams. ![]() When you educate a girl you begin to change the face of a nation and 12-year-old Sylvia Muget is one of the faces of progress in Papua New Guinea. Education is a basic human right and for many girls, it is also closely linked to health, equity and self-empowerment. Sylvia attends Aguru Elementary School in Madang, but despite her youth she has her mind made up about the future. “I want to be a nurse when I grow up!” she beamed enthusiastically. It was striking confidence from a girl in a rural setting, where children are often shy and reluctant to speak to new people and dropout rates among female students are high – a fact commonly attributed to the expectation that they help parents and families with domestic duties. As the schools begin Term Four of 2020, the Education Minister is calling on all schools to arrange extra classes, remedial work and take-home work for students.
“Schools must prepare the students well before the examinations in two weeks’ time,” stated Minister Joseph Yopyyopy. “Directions were issued for schools to return to normal on 9 June 2020. Consequently, the Secretary issued administrative instructions to all schools under the National Education System on the resumption of classes, revised term dates and national examination dates. “This meant that all programmed and timetabled teaching and learning activities per day and per week were to have been covered every week from Monday to Friday starting on June 9. |
