Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister, James Marape, has confirmed the extension and expansion of the pioneering Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) scholarship program, enabling exceptional Grade 12 students from the six national schools of excellence to pursue higher education overseas. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Marape, the STEM initiative has yielded success, propelling 43 outstanding students from the STEM program at Sogeri, Kerevat, Aiyura, Passam, Port Moresby, and Wawin national schools of excellence to secure placements in American universities via scholarships funded by the Papua New Guinea Government. This announcement underscores the government's commitment to nurturing education and creating global opportunities for the nation's talented youth. Prime Minister Marape, instrumental in establishing the six national schools of excellence and the STEM program, affirmed the government's dedication to expanding educational opportunities following extensive discussions with Education Secretary, Dr. Uke Kombra, focusing on the Department of Education's 2023 outcomes and 2024 priorities. These high-achieving students, specializing in diverse fields like mechanical engineering, biochemistry, computer software engineering, and petroleum technology, have commenced their studies at South Dakota State University and Nicholls State University in the USA. Education Secretary Kombra highlighted the exceptional performance of the existing STEM students in the USA, prompting a K10 million allocation for this year's STEM scholarship program. "Our Grade 12 STEM students represent the pinnacle of our educational system. Their success abroad demonstrates their international caliber," Prime Minister Marape expressed proudly. Additionally, Prime Minister Marape unveiled plans to explore scholarship opportunities for STEM Grade 12 school leavers in several other countries, including Hungary, China, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, among others. Indonesia has also extended 2,000 scholarships to PNG students, including non-STEM Grade 12 school leavers, an offer that the Prime Minister intends to match to double opportunities for the youth. "I aim for every Grade 12 graduate, whether through Flexible Open Distance Education (FODE) or the regular system, to have pathways for higher education," emphasized Prime Minister Marape, reiterating Papua New Guinea's commitment to providing increased educational opportunities for its youth.
