Port Moresby, January 8, 2024 - Prime Minister Hon. James Marape unveiled today a notable surge in the Government's allocation for school fee assistance in 2024, reaching a substantial figure of K856.686 million. This allocation marks an impressive upswing of K88.846 million compared to the 2023 allocation of K767.84 million. The announcement follows a comprehensive meeting between the Prime Minister and Education Secretary, Dr. Uke Kombra, assessing the Department of Education's 2023 performance and establishing priorities for the upcoming year. A first quarter allocation totaling K214 million is anticipated to be disbursed this month, strategically scheduled before the commencement of classes. During the announcement, Prime Minister Marape emphasized the imperative need for accountability in the utilization of these funds. He urged school administrations across the nation to exercise prudent management of the annual disbursements, encompassing both school fees and project fees. "Our Government is committed to a substantial annual contribution for school fee assistance, encompassing various fees. We anticipate utmost transparency and responsibility from school administrations in utilizing these funds dedicated to educating our country's children," stated Prime Minister Marape. Drawing from his past experience as the Minister of Education (2008-2011), Prime Minister Marape underscored the significance of ensuring every child's access to education, aligning with the government's persistent investment in the education sector. "No child should be deprived," asserted Prime Minister Marape. "Our interventions aim to empower the next generation to contribute to a better Papua New Guinea." In a call for collective action, Prime Minister Marape highlighted the shared responsibility among the government, parents, and citizens. He urged citizens to acknowledge their role in supporting their children's education rather than solely relying on the government. "Alongside the K856 million allocated for school fee assistance this year, we are also bolstering programs like the Higher Education Loan Programme (HELP), Higher Education Contribution Assistance Scheme (HECAS), and Tertiary Education Study Assistance Scheme (TESAS)," he added. Encouraging parental involvement, Prime Minister Marape urged active participation in supporting schools through resource contributions, volunteering, ensuring security, and engaging in activities that enrich educational institutions.
