![]() Madang Governor Ramsey Pariwa addressed the teachers of Madang province at the Holy Spirit Primary School Hall, responding to their petition and urging them to continue teaching. The teachers had submitted a petition to the Governor's office, listing nine key issues requiring action. Governor Pariwa, who was in Port Moresby at the time presenting a separate petition from the doctors and nurses of Modilon General Hospital, could not receive the teachers' petition in person. The teachers' petition followed the death of John Azagoni, Head Teacher of Meiro Primary School, who was killed by settlers from nearby settlements. Governor Pariwa addressed each demand from the teachers individually:
Demand 1: The Provincial Government to repatriate the body of the late John Azagoni to his district in Bogia. Governor Pariwa assured the teachers that this would be done. Demand 2: The Provincial Government fully compensate the family of the late John Azagoni. The Governor condemned this demand, stating that the provincial government had no part in Azagoni’s death and compensating the family would set a bad precedent. Instead, a "Bel Kol" would be given. Demand 3: A permanent provincial administrator be appointed. Governor Pariwa informed the teachers that this issue was in court and he could not comment further. Demand 4: Permanent appointment of an Education Director. Governor Pariwa assured the teachers that this would be addressed. Demand 5: Safety of all teachers in Madang province to be guaranteed. The Governor advised that safety for all cannot be guaranteed and social problems are ongoing. However, an MOU will be drawn up and signed by the Education division and local communities to ensure the protection of teachers and school properties. Demand 6: Perpetrators of the murder apprehended and brought to justice, and their immediate family evicted from the province. Governor Pariwa informed that seven suspects had been identified, and four, including the main perpetrator, had been arrested. Demand 7: Police to boost CPU operations in communities, schools, and notorious zones. The Governor stated that funds were available but internal administrative issues were delaying their release. Demand 8: A budget for the repatriation of deceased teachers within the Education Division to be made available yearly through the provincial government. Governor Pariwa commended the teachers for this suggestion and stated it could be organized in the future. Demand 9: 2023 outstanding leave fares for teachers to be paid within the month. Governor Pariwa expressed frustration over the unpaid leave fares and ordered Deputy Provincial Administrator Henry Kambuka to ensure all outstanding leave fares were settled by the end of the week. He also directed that 2024 leave fares be paid out to entitled teachers by the end of next month. The teachers accepted Governor Pariwa's responses and were urged to return to teaching as their demands would now be addressed. A call was also made to the relatives of the late Azagoni to ensure that teachers at Mikarop Primary School were not being threatened. Andrew Ariako, representing Mr. Azagoni's relatives, thanked the teachers for their actions, which had led to government intervention and recognition. Also read Comments are closed.
