FIFTEEN students will benefit from K275,000 worth of scholarships funded by the Swire University Scholarships programme, Steamships Trading Company Ltd managing director Rupert Bray said. Bray said the scholarships would be funded by John Swire and Sons Ltd and would come in two forms. “The two scholarships that would be available under the programme are Swire University Scholarships (SUS) and Taikoo College Scholarships (TCS),” he said. He said SUS would select 10 students from the University of PNG, University of Goroka, Pacific Adventist University and Divine Word University to help them.
He said the 10 students would have to be in their second year of studies to qualify for the scholarships. “TCS would select five college students, specifically the students who were studying at the IEA College of TAFE,” he said. Bray said the scholarships come in the form of tuition fees, boarding/lodging fees, airline tickets and study resources. The students, he said, can access the eligibility criteria and application forms through the company’s website. Bray said the scholarships would be awarded to students with excellent academic results. He added that the programme would complement the Steamships Community Grants programme. “The philanthropic engagement focus is on education and covers support to education initiatives in early childhood education, infrastructure support for primary and secondary schools through Steamships and now vocational and tertiary scholarships directly as Swire,” Bray said. “The Swire Higher Education Scholarship programme is one of our community engagement programmes aimed at providing financial assistance to students here in PNG for the purpose of attending a higher education institution.” He also said Swire would run the programme yearly, 15 recipients for 2024 would be announced in January.
