![]() ACTING PNG Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Department secretary Fr Jan Czuba says all universities in the country will soon introduce and follow a standardised organizational structure. Czuba told The National that universities were established at different times, hence having structures aligned with the academic system that was in place made sense. “We would like to see that all universities have four divisions which are academic, research, administrative and student services,” he said. “We have to ensure that the universities work as one body, with office of the president, vice-chancellor and university council. “The structure would tell you who is reporting to whom, who is coordinating what and who is supervising whom.” Czuba said the structure would also be helpful as it would hold people accountable for their actions.
The purpose of the restructure was, he said, to enhance effective flow of communication between universities’ heads, staff, students, parents and other stakeholders to ensure quality academic performances were achieved. Czuba added that plans were underway to ensure all higher learning institutions in the country used standardised vocabularies. He said the department would create a dictionary which would be used by all universities and colleges. “For us to communicate with the rest of the world, other government agencies, private sectors, parents, including everyone, we need to review the terminologies that we have at our universities and colleges,” Czuba said. “Currently, for example, some universities say ‘president’ while some ‘chancellor’. ‘Course’ is used in some universities while ‘programme’ in some. “Although we understand that these different terms are used in universities and colleges may mean the same thing, it may be confusing for other people.” TheNational/PNGEducationNews Also read Comments are closed.
