![]() Wewak School of Nursing has prematurely suspended classes for first and second-year students for the remaining four weeks of the academic year due to financial difficulties. School principal Jorim Zira, in a circular, said: “This comes about as a result of the financial predicament the school is facing.” He said the school would only keep third-year students to complete their studies. “We cannot run the school alone on student school fees at this time when there is inflation in the country,” Zira said. “This is beyond the school’s administrations to deal with at this moment. “The school has not been receiving any operational grants from government agencies.”
He said this seemed to be the problem since the school started implementing the diploma in general nursing training programme at Boram Hospital in 2019. Zira said the school was given provisional accreditation certification by the nursing council in 2021, yet there had not been any consistent operational funding for the college. Meanwhile, Special Parliamentary Committee on Health Matters chairman Elias Kapavore had expressed his disappointment over the suspension of classes. “I’m aware of the concerns raised by the principal, which are serious and may cause inconveniences not only for the nursing students but the parents who will be unnecessarily penalised through incompetence and system failure by those responsible,” Kapavore said. “I call on the Papua New Guinea Nursing Council, Higher Education, Research Science and Technology Department, Health National and Boram School of Nursing Administration to address this matter and allow for the smooth operations of the college to complete the academic year.” The National / PNG Education News Comments are closed.
