TWO high-achieving Australia Awards scholars from Papua New Guinea have been awarded the Allison Sudradjat Prize for 2021 for their leadership skills and determination to contribute to the country’s development.
Deputy Australian High Commissioner to PNG Paul Lehmann presented the prestigious prize to Benishar Kombut, a scientist working in community health, and Posangat Ilius, a public sector human resource expert in Port Moresby on Jan 18. The Allison Sudradjat Prize is awarded annually to two Australia Awards scholars from PNG and four from Indonesia. ![]() DIVINE Word University president Prof Fr Phil Gibbs has advised students to inform the registrar in advance of late arrivals. “We might accept late registrations, but students must first inform the registrar if they would not be travelling into Madang by this week,” he said. “They should provide details of their flights for a later date. “Some students, especially those under the higher education contribution assistance scheme have been affected and have not been able to travel into Madang last week for registrations this week.” Registration at the university started yesterday and will end on Friday. Gibbs said the Higher Education Research Science and Technology Department payment to Air Niugini was delayed, but, the payments were made last week. Education adviser and chairman of the provincial education board (PEB) Charlie Buia said getting these schools proper science facilities was a priority. He said schools had been forced to use makeshift science labs for science lessons without proper instruments and apparatus for teachers to deliver the science syllabus. Education Secretary, Dr. Uke Kombra says it was not new funding but a topping up on the TFF allocation of around K400 million by the Government. He clarified this in an interview with N-B-C News this week. The Australian Government has assisted with the direct funding support of over K80 million towards the National Government’s Tuition-free fee school fee policy, last year. ![]() A Papua New Guinea home-grown curriculum has been developed for the top-performing students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), selected into the six schools of excellence throughout the country. The curriculum, developed by a specialist team from the universities, meets global standards as well as local - with an aim of preparing these crop of students to be leaders in their respective fields internationally. PNG EDUCATION Secretary Dr Uke Kombra says the Government tuition fee subsidy (GTFS) calculations are done based on the enrolment data that is received from the schools.
He said schools that did not submitt their enrolment data for 2019, 2020 and 2021 would have payment issues. Kombra, in a statement, said provinces that were poor in submitting 2021 enrolment data were Manus, New Ireland, Gulf, Madang, Eastern Highlands apart from Morobe, East Sepik and West New Britain. He also announced that an outstanding of K211 million in GTFS funding was deposited into the school’s bank accounts yesterday. Kombra said schools should access these funds this week and start using these funds to assist with their operations and also pay off credit from last year. |
