A Papua New Guinea home-grown curriculum has been developed for the top-performing students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), selected into the six schools of excellence throughout the country. The curriculum, developed by a specialist team from the universities, meets global standards as well as local - with an aim of preparing these crop of students to be leaders in their respective fields internationally. Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra, told NBC News this week - the advanced curriculum will see these students sit for two exams at Grade 12 - the basic one and a specialist exam and also they forgo or waive foundation year at universities.
Dr. Kombra says, work is also underway for an endowment fund for these students to pursue studies overseas; The National School of Excellence concept was initiated last year and implemented at Port Moresby National High School, Sogeri, Passam, Aiyura, Kerevat and Wawin will see its first graduates this year.
