SCHOOLS in Western are in need of proper science laboratories, an educational official says. Education adviser and chairman of the provincial education board (PEB) Charlie Buia said getting these schools proper science facilities was a priority. He said schools had been forced to use makeshift science labs for science lessons without proper instruments and apparatus for teachers to deliver the science syllabus. Buia told The National that secondary schools needed proper science laboratories that were well equipped. He said the province received some science kits from the Education Department but there was a need for more.
“To have all these resources in place would cost around K2 million,” he said. Buia said the PEB had partners who assisted with maintenance work in few of their secondary schools. He said one of these partners built two new dormitories, one male and one female, for a school. He said teachers and students had resumed classes on Monday after completing their teachers’ resumptions, enrolments and registrations last week. “We have had some minor hiccups with transporting teachers to the remote schools in parts of Middle Fly, North Fly and South Fly due to limited number of flights into those areas last week,” Buia said.
