![]() PNG EDUCATION Minister Jimmy Uguro says the Government spent K620 million on government tuition fees and K160 million on primary and secondary school project fees for this year alone. Uguro made the statement in Parliament yesterday when responding to a question raised by Southern Highlands Governor William Powi concerning the total cost Government allocated to school project fees. Uguro explained that the Government has an outstanding of K151 million that includes project fees yet to be paid for term four for primary and secondary schools. ![]() Papua New Guinea is sending top high schools students to the United States of America for studies. The secretary of Education released the following statement on the students selected to study in America. "Today we passed over passport and ticket and university acceptance letter to 43 top students from our first batch of science students in a program we started in 2020. ![]() GRADE 12 students passing out from flexible, open and distance education (Fode) institutions may not be able to gain places in tertiary institutions, Ijivitari MP David Arore says. “The bottleneck issue in the education system is a shortage of spaces in tertiary institutions and that is not being addressed,” he said. Arore made the remark when asking a supplementary question to the Education Minister Jimmy Uguro in Parliament yesterday regarding the increase in Fode enrolments for Grade 12 students. “Fode is actually increasing the number of students who will need spaces in the tertiary institutions,” he added. ![]() PNG EDUCATION secretary Dr Uke Kombra is confident that the country can reach the literacy rate target of 70 per cent by 2027 “if everyone works together to roll out literacy programmes in the country”. “We have the national literacy awareness secretariat that partners with NGOs, churches and other government institutions to roll out adult literacy programmes,” he said. He was responding to a report in The National yesterday that the country’s literacy rate was the “lowest” among the Pacific island countries. ![]() DELPHINE Pius is pursuing a career in hospitality in Port Moresby after completing her training at the Bougainville Technical College (BTC) in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (Arob) recently, thanks to Australian government. From the remote Tikai village in Siwai, South Bougainville, Pius, 23, completed the theory component of her Certificate II in Commercial Cookeryat BTC last year but requires the on-the-job training (OJT) to gain her certificate which was currently not available in Bougainville. A TOTAL of 32,058 Grade 12 students from 220 secondary schools sat the Written Expression Examination yesterday.
There were also students from six national schools of excellence, plus private and permitted schools. Education secretary Dr Uke Kombra hoped that the examination was conducted fairly and free of malpractices and cheating from students and teachers. The marking of the written expression papers is scheduled for Aug 20 to 26. ![]() PAPUA New Guinea’s literacy rate stands at 63.4 per cent – the lowest in the Pacific – with the Government planning that it reaches 70 per cent by 2027, an official says. Career Trackers chief executive officer Ellenor Lutikoe told the National Content Conference in Port Moresby yesterday that according to the medium-term development goal, the literacy rate should reach 70 per cent by 2027. The signing of the MOU was between the University and Foundation took place between the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ora Renagi, OTDF CEO Havini Vira the Univesity’s DODL Department The partnership between PNG UNI-TECH DODL and NDoE, OTDF facilitates the Adult Matriculation and Flexible Open Distance Education (FODE) programs for students who are isolated or disadvantage from attending mainstream schools. The FODE and Adult Matriculation programs are offered through the OTDF’s registered study centre – Star Mountain Community Learning Centre (SMCL), formerly based in Tabubil but was relocated to Kiunga in 2015. ![]() NATIONAL Capital District (NCD) has invested over K70 million in more than 50,000 underprivileged tertiary students under the NCD 14-year education subsidy journey programme. NCD Governor Powes Parkop said this during a K2.9 million cheque presentation by Moresby South Development Authority (DA) and his office in Port Moresby. The cheque was given to 38 institutions within the three electorates who had secured the technical vocational educational training (Tvet) Scholarship and School Fee Assistance Scholarships (SFAS) this year, which was in effect since 2009. KOPEN Secondary’s four-in-one Grade 10 classroom was engulfed in flames at 2am yesterday.
The school was recently nominated by the National Education Board to introduce School of Excellence curriculum ahead of other Highlands provinces. Enga police commander Chief Inspector George Kakas said they did not know who started the fire or what caused it but the classroom was reduced to ashes. “It could have been anyone or opportunists who took advantage of the situation and set the building on fire,” he said. Kakas said at around 4pm on Sunday, four or five landowners from the Neman tribe were at the school, approached the management and the principal and demanded project money owed to them. “The students intervened to help the principal and the staff and fought with the villagers,” he said. |
