![]() NATIONAL Capital District (NCD) has invested over K70 million in more than 50,000 underprivileged tertiary students under the NCD 14-year education subsidy journey programme. NCD Governor Powes Parkop said this during a K2.9 million cheque presentation by Moresby South Development Authority (DA) and his office in Port Moresby. The cheque was given to 38 institutions within the three electorates who had secured the technical vocational educational training (Tvet) Scholarship and School Fee Assistance Scholarships (SFAS) this year, which was in effect since 2009. “We must continue to reach out to our young people,” Parkop said.
“They are the future of our country, if we fail them, we fail our country.’’ Parkop said that more platforms should to be created for young people to pursue their dreams due to the fact that over 70 per cent of the population in the country were youths. “Meeting the expectations of this youthful population must be one of our national priorities.” Parkop said the Government on its own could not reach out to the thousands of young people. Hence, more empowerment interventions as such is needed to be initiated by lower governments to help meet this national challenge. “Since 2012, 1,000 students have been awarded scholarships each year, of which a total of 11,000 have benefitted so far in Moresby South.” Institutions were urged to raise their teaching capability and programmes to a higher standard with the advancement of digital technology and artificial intelligence.
