![]() GRADE 12 students passing out from flexible, open and distance education (Fode) institutions may not be able to gain places in tertiary institutions, Ijivitari MP David Arore says. “The bottleneck issue in the education system is a shortage of spaces in tertiary institutions and that is not being addressed,” he said. Arore made the remark when asking a supplementary question to the Education Minister Jimmy Uguro in Parliament yesterday regarding the increase in Fode enrolments for Grade 12 students. “Fode is actually increasing the number of students who will need spaces in the tertiary institutions,” he added. Arore asked whether the Education Ministry and the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (Dherst) were working collaboratively to address the issue of spaces in tertiary institutions. Uguro said the Government had established Fode programmes in all secondary schools across the country and this had seen an increase in the number of enrolments.
“This year, we are expecting over 100,000 school enrolments in Fode,” Uguro said. He explained that for the first time in the education system, the Government was allowing Fode students to undergo the same learning materials and examination as all other Grade 12 students in secondary schools. “I have written to the Dherst minister to allow online selections for Fode students who will now have to apply through the online application just like all other Grade 12 students,” he said.
