Headmaster Rotana Girnna said his Wardstrip was one of the schools in Port Moresby with more than 600 students sitting the Grade Eight exams. “Like any other school, we have our disadvantages, but we try to create a better learning space for the students,” he said. Mul said this during the school’s dedication service at Evangelical Brotherhood Church (EBC) for grades 12, 10 and eight before their national examinations earlier this month. “We used to have more than 2,000 students enrolled every year but this has dropped to 1,000 because of the Government’s introduction of the flexible, open and distance education (Fode),” he said. “When we have plenty students, we have the money to pay the teachers and operational costs, which is a challenge for us. Mul said the school needed financial support to assist with staff housing. ![]() A GROUP of Grade 10 and Grade 12 students in Morobe went on “wild and fugitive-style” celebrations last weekend after completing their national examinations, police say. Morobe police commander Chief Superintendent Jacob Singura said police sent to investigate the incident at the school in Finschaafen involving both boys and girls were attacked with wire catapults. Three boys’ dormitories and classrooms were damaged. “Two male students were arrested, others escaped as police personnel were attacked with wire-catapults,” Singura said. It could not be confirmed whether the two students had been charged but Singura warned students planning such celebrations after their exams that they were subjected to the law like everyone else. ![]() PNG DEPARTMENT of Education secretary Dr Uke Kombra says deregistration and non-certification of schools is a likely penalty if involved in malpractices during national examinations. Kombra was responding to the reported leakage of the Grade 10 Agriculture examination question paper at a school in Goroka during the exam week earlier this month. “Investigations are still going on,” he said. “We will continue until we get to the bottom of it. “Someone broke into the school and got the paper and we are not sure whether the question paper was returned to the school. “We cannot make that judgment until we go through the process and see if there is an actual evidence of cheating.” Kombra said someone went into the room where the exam papers were being kept and took out a booklet containing the questions. He said the external invigilator went ahead with the examinations. “When we received the exams papers, we realised that there were only nine instead of 10 in a pack,” he said. ![]() SALT Nomane-Karamui is one of the least developed districts in Chimbu and the district development authority will try to sponsor many local school leavers to study in institutions, says local MP. Salt Nomane Karamui MP Francis Yori Alua reaffirmed this during the signing of a MoA with Mapex Training Institute (MTI) recently in Port Moresby campus. Alua said under this school fee assistance programme, district authority was ready to sponsor any students who were interested to get educated and help develop their district. “Education is the only way that will determine the progress of development in the district and right now there are not many educated people in the district,” he said. Alua said the signing of the MoU with MTI would pave way for a lot of school-leavers in the district who were currently in the village doing nothing. ![]() A private school in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province has been identified in the alleged tampering of Grade 10 examination papers and a suspect from Sugu Valley, Kagua Erave District, Southern Highlands linked to this has been arrested and is in police custody. PNG Secretary for Education Dr Uke Kombra announced this in Port Moresby today following investigations. He said investigations into this allegation revealed that the sealed exam paper had been cut open prior to the students sitting for the exam. |
