SALT Nomane-Karamui is one of the least developed districts in Chimbu and the district development authority will try to sponsor many local school leavers to study in institutions, says local MP. Salt Nomane Karamui MP Francis Yori Alua reaffirmed this during the signing of a MoA with Mapex Training Institute (MTI) recently in Port Moresby campus. Alua said under this school fee assistance programme, district authority was ready to sponsor any students who were interested to get educated and help develop their district. “Education is the only way that will determine the progress of development in the district and right now there are not many educated people in the district,” he said. Alua said the signing of the MoU with MTI would pave way for a lot of school-leavers in the district who were currently in the village doing nothing. He confirmed that the DDA allocated K1 million to sponsor more than 600 students from the district and this year K1.5 million was allocated to sponsor the students into tertiary institutions both inside and outside of the country. The MP also said there was no tough criteria, the interested candidates must be from the Salt Nomane to be eligible to apply for the programme.
“Opportunities come once in a while so school-leavers need to get their priorities right and get educated and benefit from this opportunity by registering themselves and enrol in colleges and be productive,” he said. MTI chief executive director, Marcus Palem Kara, said the duration of the MoA was five years and within this time, students from Salt Nomane were open to train with any branches of MTI. “Mapex is planning to include small-to-medium enterprise and agriculture training for school-leavers, so they can sustain commercial activities on their land,” Kara said.
