![]() PNG DEPARTMENT of Education secretary Dr Uke Kombra says deregistration and non-certification of schools is a likely penalty if involved in malpractices during national examinations. Kombra was responding to the reported leakage of the Grade 10 Agriculture examination question paper at a school in Goroka during the exam week earlier this month. “Investigations are still going on,” he said. “We will continue until we get to the bottom of it. “Someone broke into the school and got the paper and we are not sure whether the question paper was returned to the school. “We cannot make that judgment until we go through the process and see if there is an actual evidence of cheating.” Kombra said someone went into the room where the exam papers were being kept and took out a booklet containing the questions. He said the external invigilator went ahead with the examinations. “When we received the exams papers, we realised that there were only nine instead of 10 in a pack,” he said. “We examined the pack closely and identified that the side of it was allegedly cut using a blade.”
He added that the Grade 10 students’ examination results of that school would also be assessed and if there were evidence of cheating, they would not be certified. Meanwhile, Kombra said one of the suspects was caught by the police in Port Moresby and was currently in custody for questioning. Kombra said there had been no reported cases of examination cheating since 2017, and thanked everyone responsible for the examinations for the successful completion of the Grade 12 examinations last week. “There are no incidents of any malpractice with the Grade 12 exams and that is a good news for our country and the education system,” he said.
