![]() A GROUP of Grade 10 and Grade 12 students in Morobe went on “wild and fugitive-style” celebrations last weekend after completing their national examinations, police say. Morobe police commander Chief Superintendent Jacob Singura said police sent to investigate the incident at the school in Finschaafen involving both boys and girls were attacked with wire catapults. Three boys’ dormitories and classrooms were damaged. “Two male students were arrested, others escaped as police personnel were attacked with wire-catapults,” Singura said. It could not be confirmed whether the two students had been charged but Singura warned students planning such celebrations after their exams that they were subjected to the law like everyone else. He said the students allegedly started drinking on Friday night to early Saturday.
“When this happens in the school premises, it again raises the questions if the school has any control mechanisms in place to deter such actions by students,” he said. “This sets a bad precedent.” Singura said the students likely consumed cheap beer and homebrew brought into the school by the students themselves and hidden in the dormitories. He added the drinks could have been sold to the students by someone from outside. He said the students had just completed their final examinations and were preparing for the graduation ceremony. Finschhafen police station commander Insp Dominic Livar said it was sad that the money sent by parents and guardians to their children in school was being misused in such a manner. “Students have a responsibility to their parents, family and community,” he said. “You are not (in school) for such celebrations.” He added that the process in eventually getting a job was long. “(Taking exams) is just a beginning, so why engage in such activities?” Livar said those found to have supplied the alcohol products to the students would be arrested and charged.
