A third-year civil engineering student from the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (Unitech) was allegedly murdered on Saturday. The Enga Students and Staff Association released a statement identifying the victim as Junior Tep, vice-president of the association. According to the statement, Tep was stabbed outside the East Taraka campus on Saturday morning and succumbed to his injuries later that afternoon. Lae police have not yet commented on the incident. However, Darrel Yockopua, president of the Enga Students and Staff Association, confirmed that police are investigating the cause of death.
News of Tep's death has sparked concern among students, university staff, and management. The association held a meeting on Sunday with representatives from the university administration, security personnel, the student senate, and the general student body. Yockopua stated that campus security has been instructed to heighten security measures, particularly around the East Taraka area.
