Students Demand Protection: Safety Concerns Rise at University of Goroka Amid Community Attacks4/7/2024
Students at the University of Goroka in Papua New Guinea are raising alarms about their safety and well-being following repeated attacks by the local community. In a peaceful demonstration last Thursday, students came together to express their collective worries about the annual threats they face from nearby residents. They delivered a petition to Eastern Highlands provincial member Simon Sia, Goroka MP Aiye Tambua, provincial police commander Chief Superintendent Michael Welly, and community leaders, urging immediate action. During the protest, students marched around the university campus, brandishing placards and banners, and chanting for their rights and safety. Student leader Joshua Sua emphasized the need for urgent measures to restore order and security in the provincial capital. The petition outlined two main demands: an increase in police presence in Goroka town and closer collaboration between community leaders, university authorities, and law enforcement to ensure student safety. Sua stressed, "We call on the Eastern Highlands provincial government to deploy more police personnel in Goroka town." The students' mobilization was prompted by a recent incident in which a third-year male student was viciously attacked by members of the local community. Three other students were also injured, and their personal belongings, including laptops and phones, were damaged. With such incidents disrupting their studies, the protest serves as a platform for students to demand swift action to address their safety and welfare concerns. also read Comments are closed.
