Amidst severe floods and recent earthquake tremors, educational activities in 86 schools across East Sepik’s Ambunti, Wosera-Gawi, and Angoram have been abruptly halted. Thousands of students, currently enjoying their first-term break, face an uncertain future as authorities await the receding of floodwaters and evaluate the extent of damage caused. Timothy Yavu, the East Sepik education executive manager, revealed that a team from the education division conducted assessments in the affected areas, encompassing elementary and primary schools. Fortunately, high schools and secondary schools situated on higher ground remain unaffected. "The classrooms have been submerged under floodwaters for three weeks, and although the water level is gradually decreasing, the situation remains critical," stated Yavu. "We are hopeful that with the receding waters, we can resume classes promptly. However, we must be prepared for potential delays, especially if the wet weather persists." Yavu emphasized that safety remains paramount, and the resumption of classes will only occur after thorough assessments confirm the environment's suitability. Moreover, provincial protocol officer Patrick Nek announced that a disaster response team has been mobilized to address the destruction of learning materials and facilities. Relief efforts will include the provision of textbooks, furniture, water tanks, sanitation supplies, and hardware materials. In light of these challenges, Teaching Service Commission chairman Samson Wangihomie assured that teachers serving in disaster-affected schools nationwide will continue to receive their salaries until normal schooling resumes. As the region grapples with the aftermath of natural disasters, affected communities eagerly await updates on the restoration of educational activities and infrastructure. Stay tuned for further developments. Also read Comments are closed.
