![]() A third-year student at the Papua New Guinea's University of Goroka (UOG) was killed in a tribal attack on Friday, according to police reports. Eastern Highlands Provincial Police Commander Supt Michael Welly confirmed Larsen Kapira from Telapo village in Hayapuga local level government (LLG) in Tari Pori district in Hela was killed by a group of men from Bena area of Ungai-Bena district Eastern Highlands on Friday. Supt Welly said Kapira was with residents of Guava Street in Kama-Red Kona area of Goroka town trying to calm down a Bena man who was playing loud music whilst under influence of liquor. He said the attempt to stop him led to a confrontation, the Bena man then went off to fetch his tribesmen and returned with a group of them.
Supt Welly said police investigation was underway and appealed to suspects to cooperate and surrender to police. “The deceased (Kapira) was with a Hela group in their house when the Bena tribesmen attacked. He ran off but sustained an arrow wound. “He fell to the ground due to the arrow wound and the attackers ran towards him and killed him instantly,” Supt Welly said. He said the body of the student was at the Goroka Provincial Hospital morgue while six others were fighting for their lives at the hospital. Vice-President of the Hela Students and Staff Association at UoG Lora Albert said late Kapira was a third year Bachelor of Arts Education (Geography) student. “Losing a young man like Kapira is something they find it hard to accept,” he said. Through his social media page Albert said others who received injuries were still in critical condition at the hospital, fighting for their lives. He described Kapira as a trustworthy and reliable man who contributed immeasurably to both UoG Hela club. Albert appealed to relatives and friends to allow police investigation to be completed. “Brothers and sisters in this higher learning institution, I urge you all to stay united as one people. “It is a time of sorrow and heartbreaking moment but let’s think big and stay cool,” Albert said.
