TEACHERS in PNG who fail to fill their resumption of duty summary sheets will be put off the payroll as of April 5, says Education secretary Dr Uke Kombra. He said the auto-suspension of pay was to have begun on March 8, but was delayed because he was told by the Education Department payroll office that only around 50 per cent of the teachers had their data in the payroll system. “That would roughly mean 30,000 teachers will be off the payroll if we apply the (March 8 deadline),” he said. “So I have decided to move the deadline to April 5. “We hope that by then, with more advocacy and more information to the provinces, we can get all the forms input into the Alesco system.
“Then we will be able to get more up-to-date information to act on.” Kombra said the part of the reason for the delay was their having to move from Fincorp Haus to the PNGI, as a temporary arrangement, then to Vulupindi Haus. “The transitions affected our network system, staff not working at full strength,” he said. “All this affected the inputting of the forms into the Alesco payroll system.” Meanwhile, Kombra said the Teaching Service Commission has been discussing with the Personnel Management Department about the three per cent pay rise for teachers. “Teachers deserve to be treated fairly just like any other public servant,” he said.
