Papua New Guinea's Morobe government is recruiting English teachers from Australia and England to teach in secondary and high schools. The expatriate teachers’ recruitment programme was piloted by an English native, married to a local woman, who is teaching in Nawaeb Lutheran Secondary School. Governor Luther Wenge said the programme was launched to check the drop in standard of speaking and writing good English of students. “The guy (expatriate teacher) is already here so we will take him to the school,” he said. “Dregerhafen and Kabwum secondary schools are probably the next schools to get expatriate English teachers.
“Previously, we had teachers from Europe, Canada, the US, Australia and New Zealand teaching in Dregerhafen. “They taught us good English. “English is the world’s business language and international mode of communication. “That is why we must ensure that we have good English teachers. “We do not have it at the moment. “I went to universities and found that students and their leaders struggled to speak good English, unlike before.” Wenge said there was also a need for more expertise to teach applied knowledge in secondary and high schools. He said the provincial government would also be introducing the “school’s debate competition” to help sharpen their minds. The National / PNG Education news Also read
