Papua New Guinea based Pacific Adventist University, PAU, a tertiary institution operated by the South Pacific Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church has offered collaboration and partnership with the national Government.
PAU Vice Chancellor, Professor Teatulohi Matainaho said, PAU’s research platform is available and can be used by the government in its policy or legislative research. “Like other universities, PAU seeks to collaborate and foster partnership with governments, industries and communities to promote research and innovation to address the most challenging problems of today’s society.” ![]() THREE final-year computer science students from the University of Technology (Unitech) have been awarded scholarships to do an international exchange internship programme in Japan. Christopher Antipas and Adrianna Marpena will be studying at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology in Japan for a month and Paul Paten will remain in Unitech to do his internship online. Math and computer science department lecturer Sankwi Abuzo said this internship is a first-of-its-kind programme that the Nara Institute of Science and Technology in Japan is offering. “For this programme our students will do practical and theoretical research work and at the same time demonstrate work ethics,” Abuzo said. ![]() THREE teenagers, all students, were killed after an exchange of gunfire with police following an armed robbery on Tuesday in West New Britain’s Nakanai, a police official says. Provincial police commander Supt Peter Barkie said the deceased were two 19-year-olds and an 18-year-old. He said two from Kandrian were doing Grade 10 and Grade 12 at Bialla Secondary School while the other was a Grade Seven student of Vilelo Primary school and was from East Sepik’s Woginara. “Firearms are a dangerous weapon hence someone regardless of age who is in possession is considered dangerous,” Barkie said. “It’s a matter of pulling the trigger so anyone in front of someone in possession of a firearm can be killed. “As a result, we (police) are always left with no choice but to protect lives and properties.” TOTALEnergies is proposing a tertiary scholarship programme targeting third-year students of the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (Unitech) in 2024.

Saupere is an awardee of the Australia Awards PNG scholarship and a native of Hauna village in East Sepik’s Ambunti Dreikikier. Through the scholarship programme, Saupere graduated with a bachelor of midwifery from the University of Goroka in 2022. He is now working as an educator at Tinsley community health worker training school in Mt Hagen. “Because the school was in dire need of a midwife to teach obstetrics and gynaecology and didn’t have one, I took this as an opportunity to replicate the knowledge and skills that I had been taught,” he said. Saupere said that it was important to equip community health workers (CHWs) with vast knowledge about maternal health and skills to serve in the remote parts of the country. AN all-girls school of excellence is ready to be built in Gobo village, upper Jimi in Jiwaka.
First assistant secretary, inspections, Annemarie Kona was on site last week during the school’s site assessment tour and expressed immense satisfaction with the way the new infrastructures were taking shape to accommodate the all-girls school. Kona was impressed with how work on the establishment was progressing and was confident the girls would be well-educated. She also gave the approval for the establishment to start enrollment next year. ![]() Benjamin Matal is a midwife from Katom village on Karkar Island in Madang who is passionate about his profession. And with over 20 years of experience as a community health worker (CHW) and a nurse, he had seen his fair share of maternal and infant deaths. Driven by a desire to make a real difference, Matal applied for an Australia Awards scholarship. “I felt I needed to do something about the maternal and infant deaths,” he said. ![]() The University of Goroka (UOG) is calling for applications for 2024 enrolments.
