![]() Benjamin Matal is a midwife from Katom village on Karkar Island in Madang who is passionate about his profession. And with over 20 years of experience as a community health worker (CHW) and a nurse, he had seen his fair share of maternal and infant deaths. Driven by a desire to make a real difference, Matal applied for an Australia Awards scholarship. “I felt I needed to do something about the maternal and infant deaths,” he said. “So I applied for the scholarship and I told my wife that it was now my chance to contribute meaningfully back to the community.”
In 2021, Matal enrolled at the University of Goroka (UoG), where he studied midwifery practices, research, leadership and clinical experience. His hard work paid off and, on April 15, he graduated; a proud moment for him and his family. “I am now in a position where I can expand my horizon with my qualification,” he said. “I now feel that my qualification had really put me in a position where I could serve under different capacities.” Since graduating, Matal had been working at the Yagaum family health clinic, treating and counselling mothers and young women, particularly those who had suffered some form of abuse. He also attended a two-day clinical leadership course by the Australia Awards PNG and its partners.
