Kopen Secondary School will be one of the first secondary schools in Enga Province to own a standby generator set as the province is prone to daily power blackouts. The constant power blackouts experienced on a daily basis in Enga Province is a chronic disadvantage to business houses and government institutions that heavily rely on electricity for daily operations. Shedrick Opo who is a secondary school teacher revealed that the Kopen Secondary School has been operating without electricity for the past four (4) years. "Living and working without electricity in teachers houses and students dormitories was a huge challenge," Opo said.
However, the secondary school teacher sincerely acknowledged the assistance and timely intervention of veteran Enga governor Sir Peter Ipatas for donating a brand new 150 KV generator. "It gives us tremendous joy and we are thrilled to have this important asset and we thank you Sir Peter Ipatas," Mr.Opo said. As of last week, teachers and students now have constant supply of electricity into their houses and dormitories respectively. Opo also acknowledged Mr. Paipin Poko and his team of Chinese engineers who assisted us with their crane for lifting the generator set and installing it accordingly. "I am proud to be part of the working team under the supervision of our new principal, Mr. Saju Francis to work under extreme pressure to get it done in time," Mr.Opo said. Kopen Secondary School has been officially elevated into a School of Excellence which will see implementation of the upgraded status starting next year.
