![]() NATIONAL Capital District (NCD) has invested over K70 million in more than 50,000 underprivileged tertiary students under the NCD 14-year education subsidy journey programme. NCD Governor Powes Parkop said this during a K2.9 million cheque presentation by Moresby South Development Authority (DA) and his office in Port Moresby. The cheque was given to 38 institutions within the three electorates who had secured the technical vocational educational training (Tvet) Scholarship and School Fee Assistance Scholarships (SFAS) this year, which was in effect since 2009. KOPEN Secondary’s four-in-one Grade 10 classroom was engulfed in flames at 2am yesterday.
The school was recently nominated by the National Education Board to introduce School of Excellence curriculum ahead of other Highlands provinces. Enga police commander Chief Inspector George Kakas said they did not know who started the fire or what caused it but the classroom was reduced to ashes. “It could have been anyone or opportunists who took advantage of the situation and set the building on fire,” he said. Kakas said at around 4pm on Sunday, four or five landowners from the Neman tribe were at the school, approached the management and the principal and demanded project money owed to them. “The students intervened to help the principal and the staff and fought with the villagers,” he said. KUMUL Petroleum Holdings Limited (KPHL) has taken 12 graduates as part of its 2023 graduate development programme intake, managing director Wapu Sonk says.
Sonk said the graduates, eight male and four female, were from the country’s four regions who were now staff which would result in KPHL’s employees exceeding 100. “The successful candidates were selected after an intense assessment process from over 1,500 applicants and they will be placed in engineering, geology, HSE, finance and accounting positions in the company,” he said. Sonk told the graduates that they were joining the organisation at the right time, as KPHL was currently expanding its capability to participate in the upcoming LNG projects and domestic utilisation of gas. ![]() A multi-agency emergency response and incident management training exercise was conducted on Saturday 29th July as part of OTML’s effort to better prepare itself react and respond to a crisis situation. The exercise was based on a simulation of a bus crash with multiple casualties in distress. These simulated events demands a coordinated and swift response from various agencies, highlighting the significance of teamwork and preparedness in crisis situations. The formal job market currently can only accommodate between 400,000 and 500,000.
