Her mother Judith pushed her in a wheelchair onto the graduation ceremony stage on Wednesday to receive her law degree. She was one of the 109 University of PNG law students to graduate. “Today is an event in my life that I will always cherish,” Kila said. “It made me appreciate the degree I hold. It’s a degree of a noble profession.” ![]() FORMER Pomio MP and PNG national planning minister Paul Tiensten, who is currently on parole from the Bomana Correctional Institution, was among 109 University of PNG law students who graduated yesterday. An emotional Tiensten, who graduated with a bachelor of law, said it was unbelievable to have served his time in prison as well as coming out and studying law. Isabella Kila, will be among the law students to graduate tomorrow with a Bachelor in Law at the 65th graduation of the university. Despite having Tetra amelia syndrome, a disability resulting from the absence of limbs or deformed limbs, Kila’s commitment and determination to complete formal education and pursue a career in law, is the reason for her family to celebrate at her graduation tomorrow. VANIMO-GREEN MP Belden Namah has urged grade 10 and 12 school leavers who do not receive offers from secondary and tertiary institutions to not lose hope.
Namah said this at graduation ceremonies of three secondary schools in his Vanimo-Green River electorate in West Sepik last week. The schools were Green River Secondary School and Don Bosco Secondary School on Thursday and Vanimo Secondary School on Friday. Namah urged students who missed out not to feel like failures. He said there were many factors that caused a student not to reach his or her potential. Correctional Services Minister Chris Nangoi said this at the graduation of the third batch of officer cadets from JFC at Igam Barracks on Friday. Nangoi said the National Executive Council (NEC) in the last Parliament sitting in August approved the Joint Forces College legislation. He said JFC was now technically a university for the joint forces (army, police, corrections and other state agencies) complementing PNG’s national security as stated in the Vision 2050’s fourth pillar on security and international relations. ![]() MOUNT HAGEN’S Pope John Paul II Oval was turned into a wild party venue last Friday as more than 300 Grade 12 students from schools around the the city converged for a wild drinking spree to farewell each other after their examinations. Police were nowhere to be seen as students, males and females, consumed alcohol publicly with no apparent concern for the law. Attempts to get comments from the Mt Hagen provincial police yesterday were in vain. Education authorities in the province could not be reached for comments either, but Jiwaka provincial education adviser Dr Chaly Muke condemned the action of the students, saying they did not condone such actions. He said many Grade 12 students were engaged in similar activities in Jiwaka as well and this was not what education authorities expected. ![]() PORT Moresby Business College is one of the higher education institutions to have its function transferred from the Education Department to the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST), principal Carmela Mokulabeta says. She said the school had been preparing for the transition since the higher education reform Bill was passed in Parliament on Aug 27. Mokulabeta said they had written degree programmes to make the college a university by 2025. |
