![]() THE Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in Papua New Guinea has never kept any data for teachers but that is to change soon, chairman Samson Wangihomie says. He said TSC had the largest number of employees, about 65,000, and growing each year. “The biggest project at the moment is we, as the employer, had never had any data on the teachers,” he said. Wangihomie said TSC was embarking on the task to ensure that they had biodata in the office so that they knew who their teachers were and where they were. He said they were working with support from the department’s IT. Education Minister Jimmy Uguro earlier said there was a big problem across the country regarding teaching positions. ALL teachers should resume classes as there are no proper discussion for you (teachers) to withdraw your services in 2021, an official says.
PNG Teachers Association (PNGTA) national president Aita Sanangkepe said PNGTA national committee and administration was concerned about the media-released information that teachers would withdraw their services next year. “We never had any discussion with Public Employees Associations executive of such issues for teachers.” ![]() Papua New Guinea PRIME Minister James Marape says sports will be a viable alternate career option for many youths completing school. Marape, who recently announced the new cabinet, said the ministry of sports had been put together with Higher Education research, science and technology. Member for Kagua-Erave Wesley Raminai was appointed last week to take care of the ministry. “The reason why sports is attached to this sector is because it is not just a leisure activity,” Marape said. “Globally, sports is a career option. Uguro said this last week during the handover ceremony held in Port Moresby. “We have a problem with teaching positions throughout the country,” he said. “Our education policy says one teacher, one position, one pay, and many schools have problem with teachers positions, many teachers sitting on two or double positions.” A female teacher is dead in Madang Province after she was stabbed twice on her back by her husband on Christmas eve.
The incident occurred on Friday night at around 7pm at Bilia Maus Rot. An incident report by police yesterday revealed the couple was drinking alcohol and got involved in an argument when the husband stabbed her in the back. PNG Secretary for the Department of Higher Education Research Science and Technology Fr. Jan Czuba is optimistic the 2021 academic year will be a good one.

He said Prime Minister James Marape had assured him and Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra that Treasury would look for the money and make it available before schools resume in 2021. “The prime minister has assured us that they will find money in the Treasury department to top up the amount and pay,” Uguro said.
