PNG Education Minister apologises to parents, blames Covid-19 for students’ poor performance12/27/2020
PNG EDUCATION Minister Jimmy Uguro has blamed the overall poor academic performance of students this year on the Covid-19. “We had problems this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic which resulted in many of our students not being selected (to move up),” he said. “My apology to our parents and students. “It is not the Education Department’s fault, or the teacher’s fault.
“It is a world-wide pandemic which affected schools and all sectors in all countries. It affected learning.” Higher Education Research, Science and Technology secretary Fr Jan Czuba said earlier that out of 27,143 grade 12 students who applied, only 9371 met the requirements of tertiary institutions. Fr Jan said the Covid-19 had a huge impact on the students’ academic performances and many of them did not achieve the required grade point average level. He said schools were forced to close and students’ learning were affected which resulted in their poor performance. “In the education sector, we should be able to accommodate more than 12,000 students, but unfortunately, the Covid-19 compromised the academic year,” Fr Jan said. “The Covid-19 pandemic has compromised the marks students received.” TheNational/PNGEducationNews Next : 2021 Tertiary Selections List Update Comments are closed.
