A PIONEERING scientist, a maternal and child health leader and a champion of women in business were among the high-achieving Australian government scholarship alumni recognised at a gala networking dinner on Feb 11. According to a statement from the Australian High Commission, agricultural scientist Dr Deane Woruba was named alumni of the year for his ground-breaking research that is informing new approaches to cocoa pest management in Papua New Guinea. He was recognised for his community education and health work in his home province of East Sepik. Clerah Goveh was awarded the community service award for her contributions to maternal and child health in rural and remote PNG, supporting a partnership between the University of Goroka and youth with a mission. MORE than 30 Morobe students intending to study at Lae Polytech Institute have been allowed to register with a guarantee letter, a government official says.
Morobe scholarship officer Jordan Dama said these were students awaiting scholarship funds from the Morobe government and could not afford the K850 compulsory fee set by the institute. The institute’s financial controller Arnold Haip told The National last week that the K850 constituted a K350 resource fee and K500 administration fee which all students had to pay before registering. ALL higher education institutes in the country will be managed by the Department of Higher Education Research, Science and Technology (DHERST), secretary Fr Jan Czuba says.
Fr Jan told The National yesterday that Government passed a Bill last year which was gazetted on Wednesday and would become a law on Feb 26. He said this meant all higher institutions, including teachers colleges, needed to be registered with the DHERST. HIGHER education institutes are governed by an independent body and it is up to them to decide what fees to charge students. Department of Higher Education Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) secretary Fr Jan Czuba said this when asked about schools such as Mt Hagen Technical College who was charging fees for students on higher education contribution assistance scheme (Hecas) scholarship. Fr Jan said all institutions were governed by their own governing councils and were free to make decisions. Both Government ministers and members from the Opposition will be officiating the grand opening of the university. This includes founder and local MP Peter O'Neill is expected to be present at the opening ceremony. The University has released the following schedule for the opening ceremony. Meanwhile, the university has started its first enrolment this year. More than 300 students are expected to begin their studies in March this year.

The former Gordon Secondary school student was identified by Athletics PNG in March 2019 at the Pacific Games selection trials which were held in Kimbe. She had been participating in competitions in Port Moresby after relocating in 2017 from Goroka where she had first started running as a 13-year-old with the Givim 60 athletics club which is run by John Hou. Korowi attended the 2018 national championships while attending Gordon Secondary, which is one of the schools that has strongly supported Port Moresby athletics for many years. All principals in high and secondary schools in the Eastern Highlands Province are advised not to turn students away when they go to register. Eastern Highlands Governor Peter Numu said this is because the provincial government has declared free education for students doing grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. He said those who have already paid must go and get a refund or else leave it in the accounts for next year because the provincial government will cover fees for all high and secondary school students this year. “We made the announcement already on free education for high and secondary school students in the province so no one should be paying,” Mr Numu said. STAFF residing illegally in classrooms and offices at the Gerehu Primary School in Port Moresby were evicted on Friday. According to head teacher Philip Tiki, nine staff members and their families, numbering more than 20, had been using the buildings as living quarters since 2012. He said the staff included six teachers and three ancillary staff. Tiki said the staff members and their families had been using the school’s water and power increasing its utilities bill. He said the water bill had increased to K125,000. Tiki said some staff resided in the offices, others in elementary classrooms and one teacher resided in the elementary student ablution block. THE teacher education division has been instructed to charge and suspend teachers’ college principals for accepting students with low marks and without proper documents, the education secretary says. Dr Uke Kombra said these were college principals from Balob, Chimbu, Enga and Dauli. “I have given instructions to our teacher education division to charge and suspend the principals of Balob, Enga and Dauli teachers’ coleges,” he said “We want to charge the principal of Chimbu Teachers’ College but fortunate for him that he has left, so we can’t charge someone who has left the system. |
