ALL higher education institutes in the country will be managed by the Department of Higher Education Research, Science and Technology (DHERST), secretary Fr Jan Czuba says. Fr Jan told The National yesterday that Government passed a Bill last year which was gazetted on Wednesday and would become a law on Feb 26. He said this meant all higher institutions, including teachers colleges, needed to be registered with the DHERST. Fr Jan said those institutions had to meet 10 standards for institutional registration and seven standards for programme accreditation.
He said colleges would be given a year to apply for registration as a higher education institution. “We will work with colleges to help them meet our standards as institution of higher learning and try to accredit there programme,” he said. Fr Jan said the programmes at teachers colleges were already established and they had to implement the academic programme approved by the Government. He said it was important to have one programme and to have a uniform standard to ensure a higher standard to produce quality graduates who were comparable to international standards. Fr Jan said all institutions which were recognised by DHESRT were on their website. “Only the teachers colleges that were approved by the department were available for students to apply and were selected,” he said. “If students apply as a private citizen, to private teachers colleges which are not recognised by DHERST, we do not take responsibility for that.” The National / PNG Education Next : DHERST Has No Control Over Fees Charged By Tertiary Institutions Comments are closed.
